As a follow-up to the previous post: it looks like tonight's the rerunning of "A Charlie Brown Christmas" (not sure if they're going to run it again, but, if they do, I'll watch it then, too!). This time, it's slotted for a full hour, so it'll be the unedited version. (Or, at least, the version that's been run since 1968, when they cut the Coca-Cola product placements. Probably no big loss there, though, as the only relevant cut would be not showing where Linus lands after Snoopy flings him and Charlie Brown while ice skating.) (Linus originally hit a Coke billboard.)
So... yeah. If you didn't watch it last week (shame on you!), you can catch it tonight. And if you did watch it last week (good on you!), watch it again! Because it's awesome.

On TV tonight, 8 PM, ABC: "A Charlie Brown Christmas"! Yay! *Does the Peanuts dance while Vince Guaraldi's "Linus and Lucy" plays*
Of course, it looks like it may be the slightly pared down version, as they've only allocated a half hour time slot to it. (Usually, when they play the full version, they pair it with the vastly inferior "I Want a Dog for Christmas, Charlie Brown". Not that I don't still watch that, but it's not nearly as good...) But I think they're re-running "A Charlie Brown Christmas" later in the month (Christmas Eve, I think), so that'll probably be the full version. (And I, of course, will watch it again then. Hey, if I'm going to watch it every year as it is, I don't see any reason not to watch it twice!)
So ignore all those aluminum trees, don't worry about your dog and/or kid sister getting too commercial, get the disinfectant and the iodine, and remember what Christmas is really all about. But most importantly, watch!!!
But feel free to get me some real estate for Christmas. ;)

I'm glad I was over by the Help Desk to hear this one, because I don't know that I would've believed it otherwise. A user called because their phone charger was stuck in their printer.
Again, their phone charger was stuck in their printer.
How? How does one manage to do that? That's just... just... gah...
Kinda makes me glad I don't have to do those calls any more... ;)

2) Tell which song or movie film movie reminds you of them.
3) Pick a flavor of jello to wrestle you in.
4) Say something that only makes sense to the two of us.
5) First memory of you.
6) The animal you remind me of.
7) Ask something that I've always wondered about you.
8) Tell my favorite thing about them.
9) Tell my least favorite thing about them.
10) If you play, you MUST post this on yours if you want to.

(Hopefully, I'm not jinxing things by posting this now.)
This has easily been one of the most hectic weeks I've had in a long while. On Sunday, the air conditioner in the UPS room started leaking... right onto the UPS itself. (That's "Uninterruptible Power Supply"; a battery (or, in this case, set of 64 batteries) that keep an even power flow, blocking power surges or maintaining power in the case of a black- or brown-out condition.) This, naturally, had the effect of shutting down the UPS, and thus shutting off power to the server room. So Monday, our network was down completely. Joy. We were able to put the power into bypass mode (bypassing the UPS, meaning the room was getting power, but without the UPS' protection. But since it wasn't working anyway, I suppose we didn't lose much there). But, as it turns out, a fuse must have blown, as we weren't getting power on all the lines. Some hasty rerunning of cables, and we were able to get the most important servers onto the active power leads quickly enough, and the rest of the servers got powered back on once that fuse was replaced. Although the SAN (Storage Area Network, essentially a big file server) lost its network configuration AGAIN, which is quite annoying. (According to NetApp, it's a known issue, and we (hopefully) have a fix for it now.) Still, that was quite a busy Monday.
Tuesday... well, not much actually happened on Tuesday, but there was one thing that I'll mention later, which was a bit worrisome.
Wednesday, the file server in the Newtown PA office had a hardware failure. Although we have a support contract, the turnaround time is 4 hours; I realized it would be quicker to grab a server from the office (in Secaucus NJ) and drive it over to Newtown (about 70 miles). Annoying, but we got it back up and running by noon, so it was worth it, I suppose. (Unfortunately, as we were done by noon, and I had nothing really to do at that office, and couldn't justify going home that early, I wound up driving back to Secaucus. So that whole trip ate up about 3 1/2 hours of the day.)
Thursday, when I got in, the phone system was down. Which, given that I don't really deal with the phones, wasn't a situation I wanted to have to deal with. But, being the only one there, I really had no choice. Checked the equipment in the phone room, but everything appeared to be powered on. So, I sent a quick e-mail to the guy who usually handles the phones. Who then calls me a couple minutes later. On my desk phone. The one that wasn't working five minutes ago. The system magically fixed itself, I guess, because I certainly didn't do anything, and no one else was in the office yet who couldn't done anything. Weird. No idea what happened there.
Today... actually, nothing happened today, really. Had to replace a power supply in the Exchange server, but they have redundant hot-swappable supplies, so no downtime there, at least.
All in all, not a bad week per se, but a rather active one. Everything was recoverable, at least, and we didn't have nearly as much down time as we could've had.
Still, the last time I remember having a week quite that hectic, the universe decided to cap it off by having the building catch fire over the weekend. Which brings me back to Tuesday, when, apparently, someone in another department came in to find a toaster oven had been left on overnight.
Seriously, if the building catches fire again, I think I'm quitting outright. I can't go through that again. (But here's hoping it won't be necessary.) (Please, universe?) (Like I said, I hope I'm not jinxing it by mentioning it...)

Since Sama asked for some suggestions of anime series from which to produce artwork, I'm just going to make a random list of series I like...
-Oh My Goddess
-Cowboy Bebop
-Cardcaptor Sakura
-Azumanga Daioh
-various Gundam series (particularly 08th Team)
-Code Geass
-Outlaw Star
-Rurouni Kenshin
-Love Hina
-Kimagure Orange Road
-X/1999
-Cromartie High School
-.hack
-Kare Kano
-Bubblegum Crisis
-Slayers
-Record of Lodoss War
-Gunsmith Cats
-Fushigi Yugi
-Tenchi Muyo!
-Irresponsible Captain Tylor
-Hamtaro (what?)
-Voltron
-Space Battleship Yamato (some old school stuff here...)
Well, I'm sure there are others (and I'm sure you don't need ME to suggest drawing D.Gray-Man or Fullmetal Alchemist :D); if I think of others, I'll probably edit the entry to add them to the bottom?
And if you want to try some non-anime, there's always Star Wars, Transformers, Babylon 5, and Star Trek to try. (Or not.) Oh, and Peanuts. I love Peanuts. Dilbert? Mystery Science Theater 3000? (I'd also say Order of the Stick, but I don't know if you've even heard of it. Might be amusing to see, though. :D)

It appears I'm having another major bout of depression. A really, really bad one. I'm finding it almost impossible to concentrate on work anymore, a situation that probably won't end well. I think I need to see a doctor soon, although I don't predict things will turn out favorably. Quite frankly, I don't see how they can; as long as things at work keep going the way they've been going, I'm not going to be happy there, but, if I'm not there (even temporarily), they'll probably be worse in the long run. I really don't know what to do...

Not that I'm actually gonna do anything on my vacation, of course (I never do), but just not having to go into work is enough of a vacation for me.
Ah, what will I do with an entire week off? (Probably play copious amounts of Guild Wars, knowing me. Ah, well. Beats work.)

Bleh. I hate being sick. (Fortunately, I don't do it very often.)
Having a cold when it's warm out really sucks. (Especially when you're like me, and prefer to keep things cool. But turning on a fan or an air conditioner just makes the cold feel worse, so I get to suffer from the heat and the cold.)
Yeah, I know; this is probably a pretty petty thing to complain about. (Gave me a good excuse to upload a new userpic, though.)

To explain why today was so bad, I'm going to have to give some background information about my job. (I would have posted this a little earlier, but I figured it wasn't a good idea to post about work from work. Merely posting about work in general can get me in trouble, if they ever found this.)
The important things to know is that there are three network techs at the NJ office, including myself. We report to Boss in the UK; there's also a network team over there. The UK team has set themselves up to control most of the network equipment, both there and here.
Last Friday, there was an issue with users in the California office, who couldn't connect to a server in the UK. As we're supposed to, the US team attempted to resolve the issue, but had to contact the UK team for assistance; however, as it happened in the afternoon (NJ time), the UK office was already closed. While the UK office isn't particularly responsive under normal circumstances, they're especially so off hours. So getting the help we needed was a frustrating endeavor in delays, all because they won't give us the access and information we need to solve these issues on our own. As it all turned out, although we thought the issue was resolved at one point, it turned out not to be, and a UK tech fixed the issue on Saturday. (It turned out it was an issue with the UK server's DNS settings; if you don't know what that means, don't worry about it. All that's important is that the US tech (not me) who was handling most of the work on our side suggested it was a DNS issue to Boss about an hour into the process, only to be told that wasn't the case, even though it ultimately proved to be so.)
So, after that whole debacle, Big Boss (Boss' boss) wanted to hold a meeting to discuss how we can prevent such a thing from happening again; he was most unhappy it took so long to resolve the issue. Okay, fine. We (the US team) figured the blame would be placed where it belonged: on the UK team who continually refuse to give us the access, information, and/or assistance we need to fix these issues.
Nope. Where did it get placed? On us. For not getting that information sooner. Even though we've made repeated requests for it, only to be ignored. Even though the issue was on the UK's end, and was what was previously identified (by us) and dismissed (by them).
And Boss completely sold us out. Through all this, he made an issue of the fact that, in the software we use to track incident reports, the journal for this incident ticket wasn't updated throughout the process. Excuse us for actually trying to FIX the issue, instead of listing all the ways the other guys were jerking us around! Were we really supposed to fill out journal entries of "asked for admin password. Request ignored" and "finally got password; password incorrect"? Weren't we supposed to be figuring out how to keep this from happening again? How is a friggin' journal entry supposed to do that? Even if we had filled in the journal, the issue still would have taken exactly as long as it did to fix. (Well... maybe longer. Since it takes over a minute just to open a ticket, let alone update it, all that would have accomplished would have been to take us away from working on the issue.) And Big Boss agreed with him!
So, the ultimate solution was that we (the US team) have to figure out what we don't know, and try to get that knowledge. (Which, again, the UK team has made no effort to give us, but has made efforts to keep us from getting it.)
And if we don't get that knowledge? (That, once again, we've tried to get and been refused?) Big Boss implied that we should be "replaced".
We were threatened to be fired if we don't get information that we can't get without the cooperation of people who won't cooperate with us! I've been there 11 years, and have never been so blatantly threatened with termination like that. (Not even under the psycho bitch.) And over something that we can't control!
Of course, the job market totally sucks right now, and I'm terrible at selling myself even in a good market, which makes it difficult to go through job interviews (if I didn't have a friend who worked there when I started, I doubt I would've gotten this job). Not only can I not afford to be fired, I can't even look for something else.
So... yeah. That was my day. Pretty crappy, no?

I suppose I should start by offering Sama an apology. She said how much she hated the DGM dub, but I figured it couldn't be that bad, right? Well, okay, I suppose it's not really that bad... but it sure ain't good. Certainly, I can see why she hates it so much. So... sorry for doubting you, Sama.
(Note that I've only seen the first two episodes so far, however. Some things may get better. Some things may get worse. But there are some things that I don't think are likely to change.)
I suppose some parts of it aren't that bad. Some of the voices seem okay; from what little I've heard, Kanda seems okay (but he doesn't say much in the second episode, so it's hard to say). Komui's voice is alright, I suppose, but I can't get used to the way they pronounce his name. Lenalee seems fine, but, again, she doesn't have much to do in the one episode. And the "one-off" characters in the first episode were fine.
But... Allen. *Shudder* Sama, I know you were afraid they'd cast Vic Mignogna as Allen and he'd sound just like Edward Elric. But, honestly, I don't know if that would have been so bad... and it certainly would have been better than using Todd Haberkorn and having Allen sound just like Kimihiro Watanuki from xxxHolic. *Shudder again* I suppose he was fine as Watanuki; Watanuki's constant whining and complaining could be a little annoying at times, but he was supposed to be complaining all the time. But having Allen sound like he's whining? Not a good choice. Not a good choice at all.
So... yeah. While some of the other voices may be fine, when the main character feels that far off... it's probably not a good dub. *Sigh* Too bad, too; FUNimation usually does fairly decent dubs, at least, so it's a shame they missed the mark so much on this one.
And sorry again, Sama. I know you probably had high hopes for this one, and I know you're far more disappointed in the quality of the dub than I am. Ah, well, there's always the subs, I guess. (Well, I'll probably still watch the dub - I still watch Bubblegum Crisis and Love Hina dubbed (hey, someone has to), so I can sit through this one, too. But you can still watch the subs, at least.)

Today is March 2, 2009. That means I have now been at my current place of employment for eleven years. Wow. Staggers the mind, doesn't it? Guess I should take this opportunity to reflect back on what I've accomplished in life over the past eleven years...
Um... on second thought... maybe not. (Mostly because that's going to end up coming out to a big old "nothing"...)
Ah, well. At least to commemorate the event, work decided to close the office. Well, that or the massive snowstorm. Y'know, either one...

As Friday was the first Friday of the month, that meant that, once again, it was time to run a full backup on the entire network. Joy. Of course, since NetWorker is such an unbelievable piece of crap, I once again got to spend the better part of a weekend trying to get the stupid thing to run correctly. And, as usual, failing. Jobs that decide to just mysteriously stop in the middle of processing, without any kind of information as to why? Check. (Actually, they don't even stop per se; they just hang up, with no indication that there's even a problem. If I didn't check these things several times an hour, I wouldn't even know there was an issue at all. Thank you, NetWorker.) Tapes that worked fine every other time they've been used, suddenly being marked as problematic? Check. Servers that take inexplicably long times to do anything? Check. And, of course, it's now Monday morning, and I STILL don't have a proper backup finished. (Mostly because there was an issue browsing past backups on one of the servers - thank you yet again, NetWorker - so I had to delete the client from the list on the server, and then recreate it, but NetWorker decided to not recognize that we had enough licenses to do so. Even though the server was using a license just fine until I had to recreate the client definition. Plus, it was counting some client definitions twice; specifically, if there was an entry for a client to back up the entire client, and then another one for the same client, but only part of it (just the D: drive, generally), NetWorker decided that it was going to count that as TWO clients, even though they're both the same friggin' client. Even deleting those extra client definitions didn't help; NetWorker didn't want to release the licenses; I'm assuming rebooting the server may have helped there, but I can't tell, since it's still having troubles loading the tapes to actually run the backups.) (F***ing NetWorker.)
Ye gods, do I ever hate NetWorker.
If you're ever considering getting a job as a systems administrator, and you'll be responsible for using NetWorker to run backups, do yourself a favor: run away.
And, because things were going just so well, my car wouldn't start this morning. Joy. I think the battery might have died, but I really can't tell right now. Had to borrow my mother's car just to get to work. (A Chrysler Sebring handles much differently than my Honda Civic. Just throwing that one out there.)
*Sigh*
F***ing NetWorker.

Saw this one on Mark Evanier's blog (www.newsfromme.com/)...
The way this works is that each answer you give has to start with the same letter as your first name. You're not allowed to repeat an answer and if you're "tagged" by someone whose name starts with the same first letter, you can't repeat any of their answers, either.

Go through the list and check off the titles you have watched. For our purposes, "watching" a title means that for TV and OVA series, you have to have seen at least one episode. For one-shots, you have to have seen the whole thing. At the end of each genre/category, add up your sub-total. At the very end, add up the sub-totals to come up with your grand total. If your grand total is 80 or over, congratulations -- you are an obsessive anime watcher!
An Editor's Note: not all the titles listed here are great, and some are even steaming piles of crap. Titles on the list are here because they are either 1) genuinely good, 2) insanely popular, 3) good examples of the genre, or 4) just plain notorious. Good anime obsessives should be able to watch series with any of those qualities.

What a fine day this is turning out to be (sarcasm). Due to an ice storm yesterday, I wound up staying home from work (which actually wasn't so bad), but that meant I really couldn't stay home again today. (Well, I could have, but I would've felt bad about it.) So, I use the remote starter to start the car, since it's coated in ice, so it'll warm up while I finish getting ready. When I get down to the car, I put the keys in the ignition, so the car doesn't shut off (the remote starter shuts it off after about 15 minutes otherwise) while I scrape off the ice. Just as I'm finishing up... the doors lock. What!? How did THAT happen? And, of course, since the keys are in the ignition, I: a) can't get in the car, and b) the remote starter won't shut the car off. *Sigh* AAA was able to get someone to unlock it (after an hour, though), and I was able to get into work (although I suppose I wouldn't have minded another day off; I might have felt bad, but I would've gotten over it), but, still... what a way to start the day.
And how was YOUR morning?

Well, since I posted in Sama's, I guess I have to post this myself if I expect her to live up to her end of the bargain. ;) (I suppose this is one time where it's good that no one ever reads this, since I can't draw at all...)
The first five people to comment in this post get to request a sketch of a character (or whatever) of their choosing from me. In return, they have to post this in their journal, regardless of their drawing ability level. If you absolutely can't draw, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to offer drabbles or icons or something instead.
